How Long Do Chicks Need a Heat Lamp? The Handbook for Healthy Development

Baby chicks typically need a heat lamp for 4 to 6 weeks, depending on their feather growth and environmental conditions. In the first week, they require high warmth (around 95°F), which should be reduced gradually each week. As chicks develop feathers, they become better at regulating their body temperature. Instead of relying only on time, it’s important to observe their behavior—chicks that are comfortable will move freely, while cold or overheated chicks will show clear signs of distress. Once they are fully feathered and active, the heat lamp can be removed gradually.
